The world's first quantum science experiment satellite will launch: absolutely secure communication secrecy?

It is reported that in mid-August, China will launch the first quantum science experimental satellite, using quantum entanglement to enhance human confidential communication. In theory, this will enable absolute secure communication.

The so-called quantum entanglement is what Einstein said “spooky super distance effect”—no matter how far apart the two photons are, they will be in a state of entanglement of “a change, and the other also changes simultaneously”. Therefore, a pair of quantum entangled photons can be distributed as a key to any two places. A's photon changes, and B immediately senses the same. In this way, no matter what kind of secret communication is sent, the information received by both places will be the same. It is almost impossible for outsiders to tamper with or steal.

In terms of operation, quantum scientists manipulate a laser generator to divide a photon into two entangled photons. It is understood that after 20 years of painstaking research, Prof. Pan Jianwei and other scientists of China University of Science and Technology have invented repeaters that can store quantum for a long time (milliseconds). With this repeater, humans transmit entangled photons more than a hundred kilometers apart. It is reported that the "Beijing-Jinan-Hefei-Shanghai" quantum communication backbone has been established in China.

Say this satellite is about to launch. It is reported that the mass of Chinese quantum satellites to be launched will be about 600 kilograms. They will be carried by the Long March 2D rocket and will run on 500 kilometers of sun-synchronous orbit. The satellite will carry a crystal to make the laser and a pair of entangled photons and distribute them to two ground stations. Encoded photons will be emitted to the ground and the ground system will receive them. Since near-ground air or fiberglass can easily block and absorb photons, a quantum satellite communication solution that spans the atmosphere will be adopted to avoid these obstacles.

The two lasers of the quantum satellite must be aimed at two ground stations, respectively. The precision is extremely high, and it is called "tip-to-mai". In order to allow a single photon to travel for hundreds of kilometers, the ground receiver can be drilled through the atmosphere. The Chinese Quantum Satellite must correct its position and control the transmission error rate.

In the past two years, scientists in Italy, Singapore, and the United Kingdom have used satellites to explore the feasibility of quantum communications in the world and laid the foundation for quantum-secure communications. Next, China will verify the entire quantum secure communication process by launching quantum communication satellites.
