Samsung intends to use practical QLED technology estimates to enter the market within three or five years

As Hon Hai enters Sharp, hoping to acquire IGZO technology for LCD TVs and break through the oligopoly of Korean factories in the TV market, we can know that the competition in the LCD TV industry is far more fierce than it has been imagined. Not only from the functional 4K, HDR and other advanced features, but also to the underlying panel technology, both are the key to the success of LCD TVs.

Among them, in the display technology part, in recent years, SONY, Samsung are paying attention to the improvement of the traditional LCD, and LG regards the OLED technology as the revolution of the TV field. Although, OLED outstanding contrast, black level is unmatched by traditional LCD. However, users need to bear high prices, which is why Samsung, SONY and other companies have launched OLED TVs, but ultimately gave up.

In this case, the new "quantum dot" technology has become a new blue ocean for LCD/LED manufacturers. Including Samsung's SUHD, SONY's new TRILUMINOS, are all outstanding QDs in the market. What is "quantum dot" technology, in short, quantum dots is a new type of LCD screen backlight technology, through the integration of quantum dot material in the LED light source, and blue light unique to the LCD screen, to achieve better contrast and Black level.

However, "quantum dot" technology is better than traditional LED backlight technology, but still can not achieve the level of OLED. Therefore, according to foreign media reports, Samsung is currently trying to develop a new type of panel, which is the "QLED" to catch up with the level of OLED.

The report pointed out that "QLED" is an abbreviation for "Quantum Dots Light Emitting Diode Display", which is a quantum dot light-emitting diode. Different from the QD backlight technology, it is more like an OLED and has self-luminous characteristics, but the self-luminous object is not a light-emitting diode but a quantum dot. This technology can generate images by electrically driving the quantum dots themselves, eliminating the need for liquid crystals and backlighting. It is actually a new type of screen. This makes "QLED" a lot of competitive advantages, including better contrast, wider color gamut, and manufacturers can also freely control each picture element through the software, more flexible control of the display.

Currently, two companies that master quantum dot related technologies are Nanosys (for Samsung TV) and QDVision (for TCL and other brands), both of which are committed to the development of "QLED" technology. Samsung had previously demonstrated QLED TV, but did not specify its specific plans and time for entry into the consumer market.

With the development of "QLED" technology, the market will explore whether it will replace "OLED" technology. In fact, it seems too early to discuss this issue. On the one hand, OLED technology has gradually matured under the promotion of LG, and LG's OLED TV has also been improved and improved in terms of size, price, and screen image residue. Therefore, "OLED" technology still has certain advantages in the short term.

On the other hand, "QLED" is still in the conceptual stage, and Samsung has not disclosed specific commercial plans. Of course, "QLED" and "OLED" are technically similar, and it seems more ideal to use quantum dots instead of light-emitting diodes. The future development prospects are worth looking forward to. However, such development needs to wait at least three to five years before there is an opportunity to see the QLED gradually popularized in the market.
