Nintendo boss: Switch almost used Android
Tencent Digital (Shann) Nintendo Switch has already achieved a lot of success in the market, although it still lacks functionality as a gaming machine. And recently, we heard another interesting fact about this device in the development phase: Nintendo originally intended to use a customized version of Android as the operating system of Switch.
In fact, earlier in the year, we heard rumors of Nintendo intending to use the Android system. Now it seems that this argument is not groundless. According to Cyanogen chairman Kirt McMaster, Nintendo had previously contacted their company and wanted them to develop custom systems for "a portable device."
However, Cyanogen finally rejected Nintendo's request. Because, like Switch's current operating system, Nintendo needs a very closed Android system to allow them to exercise tighter control, but this runs counter to Cyanogen's corporate culture.
Even more interesting is that McMaster said that Nintendo still uses some Android elements in its existing operating system. He said that Nintendo has absolutely considered (using the Android system), but Switch's current operating system generally uses a custom kernel, while mixing a little bit of Android elements.
Cyanogen was once the most popular third-party Android system, but encountered many problems in the development process. Why Nintendo will find them instead of Google? This we do not know. It may be because Google has stricter restrictions on Android licensing, or Nintendo is dissatisfied with Google's conditions. Similarly, presumably Google does not allow its Android system to become so closed.
