Graphene is a "magic material" composed of carbon atoms with a single atomic layer thickness. Now this material has another potential application. Under the leadership of Professor Huang Jiaxing of Northwestern University, scientists used it to create a hair dye that is much less harmful than ordinary hair dyes.
Usually, hair dyes are mixed with harmful chemicals such as ammonia. These are used to "cleave" the overlapping scales that make up the skin layer of each hair. Once these scales are opened, the colorant molecules from the dye can enter the hair and chemically change them to change color. Needless to say, this process will definitely affect hair quality. Colorant molecules can also be toxic because they are small, so they can penetrate the skin and cause adverse reactions.
Graphene, on the other hand, is non-toxic and chemically inert. Hair dyes created by researchers at Northwestern University contain small pieces of graphene that wrap themselves around each hair to form a uniform coating that gives the hair a natural color of graphene. The non-toxic polymeric binder in the dye allows these graphene materials to adhere to the hair and can withstand at least 30 washes to prevent color fading.
Graphene sheets are not only non-toxic, but because they are much larger than the colorant molecules used in conventional hair dyes, they are unlikely to pass through the skin. In addition, since graphene has antistatic properties, the dye should prevent static electricity from being generated in the hair. It has been reported that the hair dye is applied to the hair and then dried for less than 10 minutes.
Hair dyes use the less common cheap graphene oxide, so the cost is not high. “People can use this hair dye to make the hair surface conductive,†said Professor Huang Jiaxing. “Then, it can be integrated with wearable electronics or become a conductive probe, and we are only limited by our imagination.â€
