Austin joins Cree's LED City Program
Austin City is the newest city to join Cree's LED City Program. Cree works with cities to expand the use of LEDs to replace traditional lighting in streets, parking lots, public areas and other places.
Austin has its own electric company. Austin has installed LED installations in several locations, including streets. Other cities in the plan include Raleigh, Toronto and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Cree is also looking to expand the use of LEDs in Japan and China.
Austin Mayor Will Wynn said that we plan to evaluate the potential of LED solutions to save energy by 47-90% over traditional lighting solutions. Just replace 5,000 street lights - just a part of Austin. Save $500,000 annually. No additional maintenance and labor costs have been included.
Austin also offers a $17 million annual tax rebate program to encourage the replacement of more environmentally friendly lighting. Austin has been using LEDs in traffic lights and pedestrian lights since 2003. These are expected to save $1.4 million annually in energy costs.
