Recently, Crystal IS Inc., a US UVC LED technology development company, announced that it has merged with Asahi Kasei, a Japanese compound semiconductor equipment manufacturer, to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Asahi Kasei. After the merger, Crystal IS will be able to take advantage of Asahi Kasei's product engineering and manufacturing excellence to accelerate the commercialization of UVC LEDs.
The effective date of the merger is December 28, 2011, but the financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. The combined company structure will be based on their respective strengths. The R&D foundation and enterprise business development department will be managed by Crystal IS, and the product engineering and manufacturing excellence department will be led by Asahi Kasei, but the headquarters of Crystal IS will continue to be located in New York State.
