UK collects solar energy by road to winter heating (Figure)

Britain wants to collect solar energy by road to heat buildings

According to foreign media reports, the UK is now planning to use the road to collect sunlight in the summer and use it in the winter, so that the road will be relieved of icing in the winter. If the plan is successful, a thorny problem that has existed for a long time no longer needs to be salted on the ground in the winter.

The British Highways Agency plans to install pipes underneath a section of the road, collecting solar energy in the summer and reusing it in the winter. Experts hope that this solution can solve the problem of road icing. Officials will also try to use the system to cool and heat buildings, reduce energy costs and reduce greenhouse gases. If the test is successful, there will be more roads using this technology.

A spokeswoman for the Highways Bureau said that this year will eventually decide which road to conduct the test. This road should have scheduled maintenance work arrangements to minimize its impact on the public. This program is known as the Seasonal Interchange Heat Transfer System (IHT). According to this plan, the relevant departments will lay a plastic pipe network filled with water under the road surface. In summer, when the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius, the water inside the tube becomes hot and is drawn into a tube insulated with polystyrene. In the winter, when the sensor finds that the outside temperature drops to 2 degrees Celsius, the warm water will be pumped back into the pipe under the road to heat the road and prevent freezing. She said that because of the need to invest a lot of money, this method will only be considered in relatively cold areas. The method of salting the road surface will not be replaced.

The plan was born after scientists from the British Transit Research Laboratory (TRL) in Berkshire conducted a two-year trial on a less traffick road near Dodington. In 2006, scientists discovered that the heat of the test pavement collected during the summer was sufficient to keep it above zero throughout the winter. The temperature of the heated road surface is on average 3 degrees Celsius higher than the surrounding ground. The test also showed that the heat from the road surface can also be used to supply cooling and heating to the building. A school in Hatfield, Hertfordshire is experimenting with similar pipes under the playground. Rotterdam will use this technology on a larger scale to prevent icing on a high-speed viaduct and to heat four offices.

The UK's Transportation Research Laboratory recently published a report saying that the under-road radiator pilot system will save the government about £8,600 a year. Henkwek McMillan, president of Aleppo Stealth Heating Systems, said the company’s parking lot used the technology to collect heat last summer, enough to heat all offices in the winter. He said that this system can generate so much heat that people are very surprised. He said: The potential of road energy storage is immeasurable. It can generate half the energy of solar panels mounted on the roof at a cost of only one-twelfth of the solar panels. Experiments conducted in a supermarket parking lot in Edinburgh pointed out that with an initial investment of £180,000, the system would reduce the supermarket's carbon footprint by 70% and save £26,000 a year in fuel costs.

Airports must always use chemical sprays to avoid ice and snow, because salt can corrode aircraft, which means the airport needs expensive wastewater purification plants. Now they are very interested in this technology. Among them, a British regular Weikemeiren started thinking about this idea after spending the summer in Scotland. He found that the asphalt surface of the road was warmer than the surrounding. He said that the United States is most interested in this technology, but some wealthy British people have begun to invest in this area. If you have a tennis court in the garden, you can use the heat it collects to heat your pool.
