LED three world giants dominate the automotive LED market
The Audi R8, which will be released this year, will be equipped with all-LED headlights from Automotive Lighting, with LEDs from OSRAM and Lumileds. This will be the second model to use LEDs in the headlights after the Lexus LS600h. The Lexus LS600h uses Koito's headlights and Nichia's LEDs.
Osram, Nichia and Lumileds (the company is also a leader in LEDs for daytime running lights). It’s no coincidence that the three companies are at the forefront of LED technology. They control the global automotive LED market in addition to the use of headlights. LED, the three companies in the high-value automotive LED market such as taillights, also accounted for the largest share of dashboards and other in-vehicle applications.
The three companies have extensive experience, and automotive applications have higher requirements for LED durability and brightness (in some applications) than mobile phones, MP3 players and TVs, making it difficult for other suppliers to challenge the Big Three. Although many other suppliers, such as Toshiba, Avago Technologies and Everlight, also sell LEDs to the automotive industry, they sell less.
Market research firm IMS Research estimated that OSRAM is the largest supplier in its report. In 2007, it accounted for about 23% of the light-duty LED market, followed by Lumileds and Nichia, with a share of around 16%. However, Lumileds and Nichia have largely not competed with each other. IMS analysts explained: "Lumileds' LEDs are mainly used for off-board applications, while Nichia's LEDs are mainly for in-vehicle applications. And their supply chains are also geographically different, for example, Nichia's LEDs for automotive applications sold in Europe. Not much, and OSRAM is very strong in this market (as is the case for both in-vehicle and off-board applications)."
In the next 10 years, this situation may change as the competitive sector shifts from in-vehicle and taillight applications to the front of the car. Lumileds, Osram and Nichia offer high-brightness and high-quality LEDs that are ideal for front lighting applications. Due to the huge potential of the LED market in the next 10 years ago, it is necessary to wait and see which giants, even those outside the Big Three, can be the most popular in 2008 and 2009 and win the most headlamps.
