Is the netbook obsolete? Fatal flaws are difficult

[Abstract] A new notebook, the GPD Pocket, recently appeared. It is more like a netbook. Is it possible to revive netbooks today when smartphone tablets are in full swing? this is a problem.

The Verge Chinese website reported on February 21

Earlier this week, my colleague Chaim Gartenberg wrote about a notebook named GPD Pocket, which raised funds on crowdfunding site Indiegogo. As Gaddingberg pointed out, the biggest advantage of the GPD Pocket lies in size and price, the screen is only 7 inches, very small, the price of 399 US dollars. However, he did not mention one point: In the year 2000 or so, when the Internet was once popular, although it was tempting, the Internet had a fatal flaw and GPD Pocket tried to revive the Internet. 10 years later, is the Internet really cool again? It may be a little overdue, but I personally really hope so.

The Internet once flourished. If you have forgotten this history, you can understand it completely. The netbook appeared around 2007, when Asus launched the Eee PC. The first-generation Eee PC was a $399 notebook with a 7-inch screen, a general processor performance, 4GB of flash memory, and no hard disk. For college students at the time, Eee PC was very attractive. The Eee PC is as portable as an ultra-mobile PC but is priced the same as a cheap Windows notebook. The Eee PC is actually a small Linux notebook, like the OLPC XO-1, but the product feels practical and not confusing. Battery life is particularly good, and it can be used for hours at a time, much longer than a portable desktop. The product was very cute. At that time, ASUS took the export number “rock solid, heart touching” (touching the mind). Every time we opened the screen, we saw this slogan.

In the following years, almost every Windows PC maker produced cheap ultra-portable notebooks. If you want a computer with a low weight, write a paper, and look at Facebook, choosing this laptop is great. iPad did not appear until 2010, the first generation of MacBook Air priced more than 1,500 US dollars. At the time of shipment, most netbooks have installed a substantial amount of hard drives. Some have also installed Windows systems. Users do not need to switch to Linux. The battery can last 6-8 hours and the on-screen keyboard becomes bigger and better.

However, Netbook made some sacrifices. First of all, it is installed Intel Atom low-power processor, sometimes even the basic computer multi-tasking can not handle. Second, Windows feels slow and clunky compared to Linux netbooks. If you want to run Windows programs, you have no choice.

Although the size of netbooks has increased, the keyboard still appears to be compact. After a while, when I recommend the netbook, I will be cautious, indicating that it is not suitable for everyone, just as I like the cheap whisky.

At the peak of the past few years, I still did not abandon the Internet, because it can become a complementary device for the computer, and I am embarrassed. In 2012, I participated in CES for the first time. At that time, I tried to use a netbook to edit pictures, and the shortcomings of insufficient performance became more and more obvious. At that time, the higher-performance slimbooks became more and more popular. The tablet has become a real device that can be used for production. The Chromebook can provide basic functions similar to netbooks at a very low price. Today, the Internet is still selling, but most of the people who buy are old users who keep the habit of using netbooks.

GPD Pocket seems to be a retro nostalgic product aimed at netbook lovers. This is a good thing and a bad thing. Like the netbook, the GPD Pocket has a small form factor, a long battery life, a low price, and a full-featured desktop operating system. Not only that, but we can also choose the Ubuntu Linux version. If the GPD Pocket is running well, there should be some users like it. I haven't tried it. The Atom processor has caused me some worry, as well as the size of the keyboard.

Will I pay for it? May not be. Now that the phone is ready to handle emails and Internet access, I used to use the Internet to do these things. If I type in a lot of text, I can use the MacBook. If I really want ultra-portable writing tools, I'll use a paper notebook. In addition, there are three small computers in my office, two from neighbors and colleagues. They were supposed to throw away. I will not add new netbooks. It is hoped that GPD can make the advantages of netbooks manifest again, create some new netbooks, and slowly change everyone's opinions.
