One of the biggest problems in suppressing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) is the lack of content, which is no secret.
Although large studios and companies are increasingly investing in VR and AR development, smaller studios or independent developers are difficult to get started. One of the important issues is that AR and VR content require developers to create a large number of 3D objects, which is usually a huge and time consuming process.
Google hopes to solve this problem through its new service, Poly. Poly is an online 3D model library that developers can use in their own applications.
This model library is somewhat similar to Flickr, but it is aimed at developers, not photographers. Anyone can upload their own 3D authoring to the Poly platform and provide it to others through a Creative Commons license. Any developer can search for and download the objects they need for their applications and games.
The models on the Poly platform are compatible with the VR platform, as well as the Apple ARKit and Google ARCore platforms, allowing developers to use them in any experience they want to create. Models created using Google's Tilt Brush can also be uploaded directly to the Poly platform.
Google said that their goal is to make it easier for developers who have no resources to have a VR and AR experience.
"Now, anyone can create a web page, and more and more people can create a mobile application, but it's not as simple as making AR and VR content," said Jason Toff, project manager for the Poly platform. "Part of our reason for this idea is that when we develop applications internally, this is also the biggest problem for our team."
Google has begun to run the Poly platform by placing a large number of internally created 3D models, but the company expects that Poly's model library will be enriched as more people share and present the objects they create.
