[Summary] For some people, excessive obsession with sleep tracker data can affect their sleep quality.
Tencent Digital (Shawn)'s unhealthy lifestyle has spawned the popularity of sports/sleep tracking devices. In the United States, about 15% of adults have a similar device, while another 50% are also considering buying.
These tracked wearables all claim to enable users to create a higher quality lifestyle. They can score all aspects of your life, allowing you to quickly learn how to change your unhealthy lifestyle.
However, doctors in the behavioral science section of Rush University Medical Center recently warned that for some people, the pursuit of this lifestyle may have unexpected results.
"So many people want to improve their sleep quality is a good thing in itself," said sleep disorder researcher Kelly Glazer Baron. "But these devices have basically exaggerated the problem of publicity. They do not accurately assess the quality of your sleep."
Baron has been studying people's fanaticism when using tracking devices. "Some people really rely too much on tracking devices, which in turn can cause stress," she said.
Baron and her colleagues recently published a study on this phenomenon in the medical journal Sleep Medicine. They named it orthosomnia.
They chose this term because the pursuit of perfect sleep quality is very similar to unhealthy attention to healthy eating (orthorexia, commonly known as perfect appetite).
The authors stated that for some patients with disorders, extreme perseverance with low-quality data on sleep trackers can affect treatment because they overestimate the actual capabilities of such devices.
